  教授,博导。工学博士(日本国立北海道大学)。先进智能机器研究院院长。
1982年2月毕业于北京邮电大学电信工程系,1985年6月北京邮电大学计算机系硕士毕业。1986年中科院计算所博士生。1997年留日。1991年9月日本北海道大学博士毕业。
曾任CSK研究员,美国新墨西哥州立大学访问教授,德岛大学教授,智能信息工程系主任,研究生院智能系统学科长,信息部门长。曾任在日中国科学技术者联盟会长,全日本中国人博士协会会长,日本新华侨华人会会长。计算机与信息学院教授。中国人工智能学会副理事长。主要从事人工智能,情感计算,智能机器人,自然语言理解,社会计算研究。日本工程会首届院士。 “长江学者奖励计划”讲座教授。日本大川信息通信基金评审专家、日本科学技术振兴机构等评审专家、中国科学院海外评审专家、中国科协海智专家、网络与交换技术国家重点实验室学术委员,情感计算与先进智能机器安徽省重点实验室主任。日本源内奖,中国吴文俊人工智能科学技术奖创新一等奖等。中国863项目,自然科学基金重点项目,文部科学研究费基础研究B,基础研究A,重点推进项目,国际合作项目,萌芽创新项目,产学研项目50多项目。
2009年11月被遴选为日本工程会首届院士,是36名首届院士中唯一的华人学者(日本工程会创立于1879年11月,现拥有101个学会、协会)。与诺贝尔获奖者高锟、美国商务部长骆家辉等被全球150家媒体评选为“2009年全球华人十大新闻人物”的前三名。
