Report Title: A Global Eddy-Resolving Intelligent Forecasting Large Model for Marine Environment

Speaker: Associate Researcher Xiang Wang

Affiliation: National University of Defense Technology

Time: 16:40-17:20, Saturday, June 7, 2025

Venue: Meeting Room 706, School of Computer Science and Information Engineering, Hefei University of Technology

Report Abstract:

The "Xihe" global marine environment forecasting large model is trained using 25 years of GLORYS12 ocean reanalysis data (1993-2017), ERA5 atmospheric reanalysis data, and sea surface temperature satellite observation data provided by CMEMS. A two-year comparison of forecasting results with international mainstream operational ocean environment numerical forecasting systems such as France's PSY4, Canada's GIOPS, Australia's OceanMPAS and the UK's FOAM shows that the forecasting accuracy of "Xihe" in core indicators such as temperature, salinity and ocean current reaches or even exceeds that of the world's advanced global numerical forecasting operational systems.

Speaker Profile:

Xiang Wang is an Associate Researcher at the College of Meteorology and Oceanography, National University of Defense Technology of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and a "Huxiang Young Talent" in Hunan Provincial Science and Technology Innovation. He has long been engaged in research on the interdisciplinary direction of intelligent marine environment forecasting, and led the development of the "Xihe" global eddy-resolving intelligent marine environment forecasting large model with second-level computing speed. He has also studied data-driven typhoon intensity forecasting technology, and his research results are being deployed and applied in many operational units. He presides over more than 10 scientific research talent projects such as the Young Scientist Project of the National Key R&D Program, the General and Youth Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, and the Hunan Provincial Excellent Young Scientists Fund. He has won one Hunan Provincial Science and Technology Progress First Prize, one National University of Defense Technology Youth Innovation First Prize and one Teaching Achievement Second Prize. He has published more than 30 SCI/EI papers in international journals and conferences, authorized more than 10 invention patents, and is a reviewer for several top-tier journals.
